Guest Stephen Hammond on Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination | HR29
Stephen Hammond, lawyer turned professional speaker, helps his clients avoid the landmines that are getting so many people and workplaces in trouble. For 27 years Stephen has educated thousands of Canadians about the importance of preventing and responding to all the inappropriate stuff that goes on at work; in particular, harassment, bullying and discrimination.
Despite the serious nature of the issues, Stephen is known for his humour, wit, and discussing issues that are current and relevant. Most importantly, people leave his sessions feeling more confident to prevent and address inappropriate workplace behaviour.
Stephen shares the importance of dealing quickly with matters that can quickly erupt into more serious situations especially when these appear to violate individual’s ability to work in a respectful work environment or are an infringement on any of the protections provided under human rights and charter of freedom legislation. His stories are real, taken from actual cases. His lessons, using his recent book The New Norm: A manager’s guide to improving workplace behaviour … and keeping out of legal hot water are practical, outlined as: 1) A big mistake; 2) Important tip; 3) Quiz on the key points; and 4) relevant Canadian legal cases on “the big mistake”.
Stephen makes a subject that could be overwhelming and mired in legalese approachable and understandable as evidenced in his keynotes “It’s Official – Everything is Offensive” and “Creating Your New Norm at Work”.

About the Guest – Stephen Hammond
Stephen Hammond is an author, speaker, trainer, and consultant in the field of the weird things people do at work that get them into trouble. Since 1992 Stephen has rescued organizations from workplace disasters and helped them to change with the times. While Stephen is a lawyer by trade and still a member of the Law Society of B.C., he no longer practices law. His favourite pastimes are downhill skiing, golfing, and playing ball with his dogs Rufus and Baxter. Stephen’s goal is to support welcoming workplaces.
At a relatively young age, Stephen Hammond’s life experiences shared his views and passions regarding human rights. Between obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School, Stephen was the executive director of one of Manitoba’s political parties and was thrown into jail in communist Poland, accused of being a spy for the West. Stephen was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 1988 and proceeded to work in the field of labour and employee relations both in the private and public sectors.

About the Host:
Susan has worked with people all her life. As a human resource professional, she has specialized in all aspects of employment, from hiring to retirement. She got her start as a national representative for a large Canadian union. After pursuing an undergrad degree in business administration, Susan transitioned to HR management, where she aspired to bring both employee and management perspectives to her work. She retired from her multi-decade career in HR to pursue writing and consulting, and to be able, in her words, to “colour outside the lines.” She promises some fun and lots of learning through this podcast series.
