Episode 62

Psychological Safety with Host Susan Ney | HR 62

Many of our organizations are striving to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplaces. We can’t achieve any of these without ensuring that these same work environments are felt to be psychologically safe, where candor and willingness to engage in “productive conflict” is part and parcel of learning from different points of view.

According to Amy Edmondson in her excellent book The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth, “…in a psychologically safe workplace, people are not hindered by interpersonal fear. They feel willing and able to take the inherent interpersonal risks of candor. They fear holding back their full participation more than they fear sharing a potentially sensitive, threatening, or wrong idea.”

As a leader, are you helping create a psychologically safe work environment by practicing attributes of “leader inclusiveness” - of being approachable and accessible, willing to acknowledge your fallibility, and proactively inviting input?
